The Mediterranean Sea had been central to Western civilization, depicted in classical literature as a sea of great possibilities—from ancient maritime myths to significant historical events. Throughout its history, the Mediterranean’s westernmost point, the Strait of Gibraltar, was a crucial focal point, shaped by tides, migrations, and ongoing convergences. This symposium positioned the Western Mediterranean within the broader contexts of the Mediterranean region, the Atlantic, and North Africa. It explored its historical, cultural, biological, geographical, and legal dimensions, offering a thematic approach to key topics including (but not limited to) Colonial History, Language, Nature Conservation, Ornithology, Law, and Food Culture; all of which connected the Western Mediterranean to the wider region and beyond.
