The decision to study the MA in Leadership and Management at the University of Gibraltar came at an important stage in my professional journey.
As a specialist Speech and Language Therapist with over 15 years of clinical experience, I had already developed strong clinical skills and extensive experience. However, I increasingly recognised that effective healthcare also requires strong leadership, strategic thinking and the ability to influence systems and teams beyond direct clinical practice.
The programme gave me the opportunity to step outside of my usual clinical perspective and think more broadly about leadership within organisations, service development, communication, and decision-making. Balancing postgraduate study alongside professional responsibilities was extremely challenging at times but ultimately it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. The programme required significant persistence, discipline and personal investment, particularly whilst working within a demanding clinical profession. Completing the MA reinforced for me how important it is for those in leadership positions to have a strong theoretical understanding of leadership, organisational behaviour, and professional influence. When leading teams and shaping workplace culture, decisions should not rely solely on experience or intuition but should also be guided by evidence-based principles and critical reflection.
One of the most valuable aspects of the course was the way it encouraged critical thinking and independent analysis, particularly during the capstone project, where we were expected to apply leadership and management theory to real-world organisational challenges. Throughout the MA, I developed a much stronger understanding of leadership styles, organisational behaviour, strategic management, and evidence-based decision making. The programme also strengthened my confidence in academic writing, research, presentation skills, and professional communication.
A particular highlight was learning alongside those from different backgrounds and industries. Hearing diverse perspectives allowed me to appreciate how many leadership challenges are shared across sectors, whether in healthcare, business, education, or public services. The supportive environment created by the lecturers and supervisors also played an important role in helping me grow academically and professionally.
The MA has had a significant impact on my professional development. It has strengthened my confidence in taking initiative, managing complex situations, and contributing to wider organisational discussions and projects. I now approach challenges with a more analytical and strategic mindset, considering not only immediate solutions but also longer-term implications and opportunities for improvement.
Since completing the programme, I continue to work as a Speech and Language Therapist while also applying the leadership and management skills gained through the MA in my wider professional practice. The course has reinforced the importance of adaptable, compassionate and evidence-informed leadership, particularly within healthcare environments where communication and collaboration are essential.
Studying at the University of Gibraltar was both a challenging and rewarding experience. The programme pushed me to develop professionally and personally and I am grateful for the knowledge, skills, and confidence it has given me moving forward in my career.
