It is with great pleasure and admiration that we celebrate the remarkable achievements of Professor David Abulafia, who has been awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his exceptional services to scholarship. A distinguished historian and expert in Mediterranean history, Professor Abulafia’s contributions have significantly enriched our understanding of the region’s economic, social, and political development. This honour is a testament to his outstanding scholarly work and the profound impact he has had on the field.
Professor Abulafia’s illustrious career has been characterised by an unwavering commitment to his craft. Currently serving as Beacon Professor at the University of Gibraltar and Professor of Mediterranean History at the University of Cambridge, he has dedicated his academic journey to unravelling the complexities of the Mediterranean’s past. As a Papathomas Professorial Fellow at Gonville and Caius College, he has not only shared his knowledge with countless students but has also held key administrative roles, including Chairman of the History Faculty.
Professor Abulafia’s expertise have earned him numerous accolades and recognition throughout his career. He is a Fellow of the esteemed British Academy and a member of the Academia Europaea. His invaluable contributions to historical research have been acknowledged internationally, including a decoration by the President of Italy for his services to history. Notably, his seminal work, “The Boundless Sea: A Human History of the Oceans,” published in 2019, was honoured with the prestigious Wolfson History Prize.
Professor Abulafia’s research encompasses various periods and regions. His exploration of the Mediterranean’s history, particularly during the Middle Ages and Renaissance in Italy and Spain, has shed light on the economic, social, and political dynamics of the region. Additionally, his studies of religious interactions in medieval Spain and Sicily have contributed significantly to our understanding of the complex interplay between different faiths during that era.
