The University of Gibraltar is committed to the continuous evolution of our MEd to ensure it meets the latest professional and industry standards. As such, the curriculum has been updated to integrate emerging best practices.
Please note that module titles and content are subject to change as part of this commitment to excellence. All applicants will be notified of the finalized structure during the offer process.
Hear directly from MEd graduates at the University of Gibraltar about how the programme has enhanced their teaching practice.
The programme is part-time over two years (although a maximum of four years registration is permitted). Taught sessions will take place twice a week in the evenings.
The programme is based on a series of modules focussing on different areas of import within the field of education.
MED73001 – The Foundations of Education and Educational Research
This module provides a comprehensive introduction at postgraduate level to the study of education by exploring both the foundational ideas that shape educational thought and practice, and the principles of research that inform educational knowledge and development. It establishes a coherent and integrative foundation for the MEd programme, supporting students’ engagement with subsequent modules and preparing them for independent enquiry within the field of education.
The module examines the contribution of the main disciplines that configure what is known as educational sciences (mainly, Psychology, History, Philosophy, and Policy Sociology). Students will explore key themes and theories that have shaped educational systems and thinking over time, such as the purpose and aims of education in society; the nature of knowledge, learning, and understanding; and the role of values and ethics in educational practice. Through critical engagement with these ideas, students will be encouraged to reflect upon and challenge their own assumptions about education while considering how educational theory informs policy and practice.
Alongside this exploration of educational foundations, the module introduces students to the principles and processes of research in education. Students will develop an understanding of the role of research in generating educational knowledge and informing improvement in practice. Students will examine different ontological and epistemological approaches to educational research, the concept of the teacher-as-researcher, and the relationship between research, policy, and classroom practice.
MED73002 – A Critical Perspective on 21st Century Educational Challenges
This module provides Master’s level students with the opportunity to critically examine the key challenges shaping education in the 21st century, with a particular focus on the impact of technology, globalisation, citizenship, diversity and inclusion, and climate change. It explores how contemporary societal, and educational issues influence both policy and practice at local, national and global level, and how educators can respond in informed, reflective, and transformative ways.
The module adopts both macro and micro perspectives, considering global and sustainable citizenship education and wider societal dynamics, as well as their translation into inclusive educational practices. It emphasises the role of educators not only as reflective practitioners but as agents of change, capable of fostering meaningful sustainable and inclusive practices.
Through critical engagement with current research, policy analysis, and professional practice, students will interrogate contemporary debates, including the effectiveness and implications of different approaches in diverse settings. Drawing on their own professional contexts, they will develop the capacity to make evidence-informed decisions that support sustainable, inclusive, equitable, and future-focused education.
MED73003 – Educational Policy and Leadership: Systems, Curriculum and Actors
This module explores the interplay between educational policy, leadership and curriculum in shaping effective learning environments. It examines educational systems at local, national, and international levels, comparing different approaches and exploring the drivers, purposes, and values embedded within them. Students will critically analyse the relationship between educational policy, leadership and decision-making, and consider the applicability of international perspectives to their local context. Subsequently, it examines the roles of leaders in navigating organisational challenges, implementing educational changes, and influencing teaching and learning practices. Students will critically engage with models of educational leadership and management, exploring how these approaches can be applied strategically to support staff, learners, and wider institutional goals. By the end of the module, students will be able to synthesise knowledge of systems, actors, and curriculum to evaluate and propose strategies for effective leadership and policy implementation within educational settings.
MED73004 – The Reciprocity of Professionalism: Reflective and Reflexive Stakeholders in Education*
This module explores the reciprocal nature of professionalism in education, focusing on the ways in which educators engage as reflective and reflexive practitioners within diverse and interconnected professional contexts. It provides a critical foundation for understanding how relationships, collaboration, and social responsibility shape educational practice at both local, national and global levels.
The module examines the wide range of partnerships that educators form with colleagues, learners, families, and wider stakeholders. Students will explore the dynamics of intra- and inter-professional relationships, critically analysing collaboration, communication, and the boundaries of professional practice.
The module equips students to effectively approach and manage the complexities of professional practice; particular attention is given to the role of reflection and reflexivity in understanding how personal beliefs, values, and emotions influence professional interactions, decision-making, and behaviours.
* Students who have undertaken a PGCE in the previous 5 years would be exempted from this module.
MED76008 – Independent Research Project
This module will allow students to demonstrate a consolidation of the learning acquired throughout their MEd. within a single research project on a topic of their choice*. They will be expected to work independently with support from their tutors/supervisors as there is no element of ‘taught sessions’ within this module. Students will carry out an independent study on a topic of their choice. They will have the opportunity to apply the comprehensive theoretical knowledge, understanding and skills that they obtained throughout the MEd. To an area of individual interest.
This module will aid the students in their transition from primarily receptors of information into to becoming independent researchers. It will hone their skills in critical thinking, communication and stakeholder engagement, data collection and analysis, critical evaluation and reflection, academic writing, verbal presentation and oral defence. This module will be of particular relevance to students wishing to progress into an academic research career or PhD study.
*The focus of the dissertation is discussed to determine its feasibility with the tutor/supervisor assigned.
The University is delighted to have achieved global accreditation from the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), the UK’s independent quality body and a global leader in quality assurance for higher education.
