About this course

The University of Gibraltar is the accredited centre for the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) qualifications, and we are pleased to be offering the CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice, which forms the second academic training stage to becoming a Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer, and is the follow-on course from the Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice. On successful completion of the qualification candidates are eligible to become members of CILEx.

As a general rule, a Chartered Legal Executive lawyer is able to do all the work that may be undertaken by a solicitor under the supervision of a principal. Chartered Legal Executives tend to specialise in one area of law, unlike their solicitor partners who may have trained and practiced across several areas.

What is CILEx?

CILEx is a professional body which represents 20,000 members, from Chartered Legal Executives to Paralegals. Founded in 1892, and incorporated by Royal Charter in 2012, in the past 25 years over 95,000 people have chosen CILEx qualifications to enhance their career prospects in legal practice.  The courses offer opportunities to further enhance career and qualification ambitions. The routes are very flexible in terms of timelines in becoming a Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer.
