Gibraltar has its own legal system, which although based on the English judicial system, has its own laws and distinctive character.
This course is designed to give a solid foundation in the specifics of the Gibraltar legal system and provide a common standardised platform for professionals looking to practise in this field.

Who is the course for?

Persons who wish to be admitted and enrolled as either a solicitor or barrister of the Supreme Court of Gibraltar having completed the Solicitors’ Legal Practice Course (“LPC”) in England and Wales or having been called to the Bar in England and Wales.

The course is suitable for qualified legal professionals who are looking to obtain a Gibraltar-recognised professional certification. Non-law graduates who wish to undertake this course may do so on an observational basis.  This category shall not undertake any assessments and upon completion shall receive a Certificate of Attendance.

What would I get at the end of the course?

Upon successfully completing the course, all participants will be awarded a Professional Certificate of Competence in Gibraltar Law from the University of Gibraltar, which is one of three mandatory components to being called to the Bar or to being enrolled as a Solicitor in Gibraltar (after 1st July 2015).

Course delivery

The course aims are:

  1. To provide training on Gibraltar Law to persons who wish to practise law in Gibraltar;
  2. To provide an acknowledgement that such training has been completed to a recognised standard; and
  3. To enhance professional standards of those engaged in work involving Gibraltar Law.

This course is a statutory requirement by virtue of The Amendment to the Supreme Court Act (2015). This legislation requires all persons who wish to be admitted and enrolled as either a solicitor or barrister of the Supreme Court of Gibraltar and who have completed the Solicitors’ LPC or been called to the Bar in England and Wales to complete three mandatory components. One of these components is academic which is delivered by way of a Professional Certificate of Competence in Gibraltar Law.

This course is independently recognised by the Gibraltar Bar Council. The awarding body for this course is the University of Gibraltar. The University is the academic institution and, as such, the provider of the course and examinations and is not involved in determining who is eligible to practise law in Gibraltar. Enquiries on whether a person is eligible to practise law in Gibraltar can be made to the Registrar of the Supreme Court.

Course structure

The University of Gibraltar will be running this course on a part-time basis. It commences in October 2019 and sessions will take place once a week (Wednesdays) from 18:00 – 20:00 in our main campus.

These times have been arranged in order to take into account those already in employment. The areas of law are reviewed in consultation with the University’s External Assessor, Minister for Justice and Chief Justice at the end of every course offering and after the Examinations Board has met. Entry profile

To be eligible for this course, candidates should hold a Law degree or a legal qualification such as CILEx level 6. Non-law graduates wishing to attend this course can do so on an observational basis. If English is not your first language, you will need to provide proof of competence in English which is acceptable to the University.

Fees

The fee for this course is £1,900. This includes all University of Gibraltar application and initial registration fees, as well as covering your local course materials, supervision and tuition. The fee for non-law graduates to attend on an observational basis is £525.
