Python

Python is an interpreted, object-oriented, high-level built-in programming language with dynamic semantics. Its high-level built in data structures, combined with dynamic typing and dynamic binding, make it very attractive for Rapid Application Development, as well as for use as a scripting or glue language to connect existing components together.
You will have the option of obtaining an associate certification or a professional certification.

C++

C++ is an object-oriented programming language which gives a clear structure to programs and allows code to be reused, lowering development costs. C++ is portable and can be used to develop applications that can be adapted to multiple platforms.
You will have the option of obtaining an associate certification.

CompTIA Network+

The CompTIA Network+ certification verifies that you have the essential knowledge and skills in networking to develop a career in IT infrastructure. CompTIA Network+ prepares you to support the network regardless of the platform.
You will have the option of completing the CompTIA Network+ (N10-008) certification exam.

Modules

The BSc (Hons) Business and Computing programme is designed to prepare you for a successful career in the IT industry, with a focus on software engineering and project management. The programme is delivered by expert teaching staff and industry professionals.

This three-year full-time programme requires a minimum commitment of sixteen hours of class time per week, while the part-time programme is offered over a maximum period of six years, with a minimum commitment of eight hours of class time per week.

Semester 1

Introduction to Computer & Operating Systems

Operating systems along with hardware and software components form an integral part of Computer Systems. This module focuses on modern computer architecture and system software. It provides an introduction to the structure and mechanism used by the operating system to control the execution of application software and to provide access to the hardware components.

Introduction to Accounting and Finance

This thirty credit module introduces the basic concepts and principles of accounting and finance with an emphasis on their use in business decision-making. As a minimum, understanding the basic format of financial statements, the development of financial budgets and costing of products and services is essential to being an effective business decision maker and manager. The module focuses on the practical and functional nature of business decisions from the perspective of financial accounting and finance; managerial costing and budgetary policies; profit-planning; capital investments and management; and financing of business operations.

Management Information Systems

This module provides the theoretical framework that will allow students to understand the importance of management information systems in an organisation and how this moulds future strategic decisions.
Semester 2

Principles of Management

The module seeks to ensure that all graduating students have an understanding of broad management concepts and their inter-relationships in a global context. Effective management is essential for the success of all private, not-for-profit and public organisations no matter where in the world they are located. A pre-requisite for effective management is an understanding of the origins of management and its main theoretical perspectives; how to plan and make decisions, organise, lead and control, how to motivate staff, and manage change in different business environments.
This module provides students with a general introduction to organisations and the functions of management. Topic areas will address issues related to organisations, management, and society. The module will cover the core management functions of leading, planning, controlling and organising.

Introduction to Programming

This module introduces the fundamentals of computer programming and algorithm construction. Students will develop basic skills in programming by learning the core control structures and problem-solving strategies with Python programming language.

Principles of Marketing (incl. Employment Project)

This thirty credit module provides knowledge and practice in the analytical, creative and strategic functions of marketing.
It presents a set of approaches and frameworks centred upon the “4Ps” (Product, Price, Place, and Promotion), to develop the student’s competence to create a marketing plan, one of the major tools of business. Marketing starts with understanding consumer’s preferences for products and services and attempts to satisfy their different wants and needs in a profitable manner. Students will then have the opportunity to apply the theory by devising a marketing plan for a local organisation. This will be a group project which is designed to assist them to build their levels of employability and their commitment to continuing professional development. Prior to undertaking the project, students will have the opportunity to enhance and apply their skills, ensuring that they make the most of their potential, and will then have the opportunity to apply these skills when interacting with the organisation.
Semester 1

Databases and Big Data

The purpose of this module is to provide a comprehensive view of the database design, management and analysis along with the current trends in the database management system.

Software Engineering 1

Software engineering 1 is a key component of computer science and is an in-demand skill for the workplace inside and outside of the IT industry. This module introduces the fundamental principles of software engineering using high-level language with complementary tools, including elements of the software engineering life cycle. Students will practise the skills to produce simple products.

Entrepreneurship

This module provides students with an in-depth understanding of the entrepreneurial process. It includes how to recognise new business opportunities, screen these for commercial and/or social viability, unlock market potential, and assess the potential customer demand in the context of competitive environments and financial constraints. This module requires students to identify a market opportunity and to develop ideas using a variety of tools to assess the viability of new business ideas.

Web Programming

This module includes the core concepts of web programming including rendering web pages, client side scripting and server side scripting, and involves various programming languages such as HTML, JavaScript and PHP.
Semester 2

Software Engineering 2

Software Engineering 2 builds on the foundation delivered in Software Engineering 1. It covers all stages of the Software Engineering Life Cycle i.e. the process from requirements through to modelling, design and testing with the use of Agile management techniques with a scrum approach to manage this process.

Networks

This module covers current networks technologies and the required infrastructure which includes the essential stages involved in the communication process. It will establish a solid knowledge of the layered approach that makes design, implementation and operation of extensive networks possible.

Business Law

The module will cover an introduction to Gibraltar and UK law, including company and insolvency law; the impact of civil, criminal and general law on businesses and professional services; and will also introduce students to employment law and practices in the Gibraltar context.

Human Resource Management

In this Human Resource Management module, you will dive into key HRM functions such as job analysis, recruitment, selection, training, performance management, health and safety, and rewards and motivation. You’ll explore both theoretical concepts and practical applications, learning how HRM practices enhance efficiency and productivity in organizations. The course offers opportunities for intellectual debate and hands-on experiences, helping you link theory to real-world practice. By the end, you’ll be equipped to critically analyse HRM issues and propose effective solutions, understanding the strategic role of HRM in diverse and contemporary workplaces.
Semester 1

Innovative Studies

This module aims to provide an overview of the latest trends in technology from a computational perspective (e.g. Block Chain/ Crypto/Fintech/Robotics/AI). It will be delivered by a range of specialists who will share their expertise and experiences with students providing insights into the jobs, products and services that may be created by these new technology trends.

Management Strategy and Business Ethics

Strategy, both at the level of corporations and that of strategic business units, provides the framework within which business operates by setting goals and establishing the means (tactics, plans, policies, and actions) to achieve those goals. As organisations and their environments are continually changing, this requires the mastery of a wide range of topics and the ability to analyse, synthesise, and integrate information and concepts quickly to ensure effective management decision-making. Ethics is interwoven into all aspects of business. Ethics is more than a descriptive study of morality. Rather, it is considered as a normative study of morality that requires people to make judgments. When a person begins questioning their own, or society’s, moral standards they begin to engage in ethical decision making.
This thirty credit module addresses the practice of strategic decision-making through an intensive examination of key topics including the nature of strategy; competitive strategies and frameworks for analysis; strategies in different industry environments, including mature and new or innovative industries; strategy and organisation; and strategy in an international competitive environment. The module adopts a case study approach and throughout, the students will be introduced to ethical and governance issues and will examine their application to the case studies examined.

Cloud Computing

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the impacts of cloud computing on businesses and society in general by providing the principles and concepts of cloud computing and then building upon these foundations.
Semester 2

Cyber Security

This module aims to equip students with knowledge of how to build a security system and embed the latest technology/tools and techniques to predict intruders, defend to minimise damage and attack to preserve security and the economy.

Placement with Employability Skills

This module is designed to assist students to successfully transition from university to the workforce and aims to guide students’ application of knowledge gained through previous modules to the work environment. A key focus of the module will be to assist students with their career development and preparedness through a combination of personal, professional and career enhancement activities. The module will specifically cover job search and interviewing skills which will help students prepare for employment, and future career advancement. This module also gives year 3 students the opportunity to conduct a six-week work placement/ internship within the local business community and within or closely related to their field of study.

Capstone Project

Students will have the opportunity to independently tackle a large project that reflects real world software development. They will apply their computational and entrepreneurial skills to solve a problem in an innovative and practical way.

Entry Requirements

Typically, all applicants should have:

  • BCC at ‘A level’ (104 UCAS) points or international equivalent; e.g. international baccalaureate at a score 16 or above, to include one from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Information or Design Technology.

All applicants should have:

  • 5 GCSE’s at grade 4 or above (A* – C pre 2017) including English Language, Mathematics, and Science (or international equivalent).
  • Strong communications skills with the ability to communicate your ideas effectively in discussions, presentations and writing.

English Language Requirements:

  • An overall IELTS test result of 6.5, including a minimum of 6.0 in all sub-tests. Equivalent awards will be considered (e.g. Pearson’s Test of English, Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English, Duolingo English Test, City & Guilds International ESOL 8984, or the TOEFL- IBT test of English proficiency).
