About this programme

This degree will provide you with the opportunity to start a career as an officer at sea.
Graduates may, for example, choose to work in the Merchant Navy; on a research ship; a cruise ship or a super-yacht.
Our BSc (Hons) Maritime Science programme is aligned to Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) and Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) standards.

Navigation | Ship Design & Architecture | Bridge Management | Ship Handling & Voyage Planning | Engineering | Mechanics & Propulsion

A unique feature of this programme is that engineering and nautical students can work together through the programme’s joint modules.
Please note that students can opt not to complete the final dissertation and exit with a BSc degree at an earlier stage in their studies.

Entry profile

Typically, applicants for the BSc (Hons) Maritime Science programme will have:
  • ‘A’ levels (grade B,C,C) and 5 GCSE’s (minimum grade C or grade 4 including Maths and English) or international equivalent. Alternatively, evidence of relevant industry experience.
  • Strong communications skills with the ability to communicate your ideas effectively in discussions, presentations and writing.
  • Basic IT skills such as word-processing, email and internet.
If you do not meet our entry requirements, you can still apply as we will consider your application.

English language requirements:

A proficiency equivalent to IELTS test average score of 6.0. If you do not meet this requirement additional intensive training can be provided.
