DARREN FA

Dr Darren Fa is currently the Director of Research and Partnerships at the University of Gibraltar.

After obtaining his PhD in Biological Oceanography from the University of Southampton In 1998, he then moved to the Gibraltar Museum in 1999 as Education and Research Officer, and subsequently Deputy Director. He also read for a Master’s Degree in Museums Studies from the University of Leicester (2004).

Darren has been principal investigator on a number of EU and EFCHED funded projects, including Director of the Gibraltar Caves Project, which was responsible for the nomination and subsequent successful listing of the Gorham’s Cave Complex as a UNESCO World-Heritage Site. He has received several international awards as part of multidisciplinary research teams and has also acted as a consultant for Her Majesty’s Gibraltar and UK Governments as well as the European Union and UNESCO on both natural-history and heritage matters. The author of several popular books on a diverse range of subjects and for a variety of audiences, he has been regularly consulted and has appeared in numerous international media articles and television documentaries.  Darren has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles in various international journals and book chapters, principally on ecological, palaeoenvironmental, evolution-related and archaeological subjects.

His current role involves heading the University’s flagship PhD programme, as well as coordinating all research activities of the University, including those of its active Research Institutes and Centres. He is also responsible for research support facilities including the University’s Library and Laboratories.

Finally, engaging, developing and implementing all academic partnerships in collaboration with other HE institutions and stakeholders forms a significant part of his job.

Darren is a member of HMGoG’s Nature Conservancy Council, as well as a Registered European Commission Expert on Environment and Higher Education and an Elected Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London.
