About the speaker

After graduating from LSE, Sir Bob Neill spent 25 years as a barrister specialising in criminal law. He served as a councillor in Havering, on the Greater London Council, and later as a London Assembly member, during which time he led the Conservative group. Elected as the MP for Bromley and Chislehurst in 2006, he served as a Shadow Local Government Minister and Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party. Following the 2010 General Election, he was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Communities and Local Government with responsibility for planning and local government. He has also served as a Member of the Parliamentary Assembly on the Council of Europe, and since June 2015 has chaired the House of Commons Justice Select Committee.

He is a Master of the Bench at the Middle Temple Inn and chairs a number of All-Party Parliamentary Groups in Parliament. In the 2020 New Year Honours list, Bob was knighted for political service.
