Students at the University of Gibraltar will soon enjoy an all-new and bespoke social, collaborative space thanks to a generous donation from the Alwani Foundation.
Named The Kishin Alwani Student Common Room, it is designed to enrich the student experience by providing a more informal place where students can build connections and collaborate with ease. As the University grows over the term of its 5-year strategic plan, bespoke student social spaces like this one will be designated at the Campus, and networking events will be hosted to assist students to build connections across the student body and meet locally based alumni.
Rather fittingly, the Common Room design and layout is a true collaboration between all involved with University of Gibraltar staff members, The Kishin Alwani Foundation, and local interior design companies developing the concept. The space will have an informal feel and it will be uniquely and unmistakably Gibraltarian, with a large mural painted by local artist Paul Cosquieri featuring prominently in the pace. On behalf of the Foundation, Mr Alwani said:
“We are delighted to make this contribution to Gibraltar’s new University. We hope the Common Room will benefit many students in the years ahead and become one of the preferred meeting venues.”
Professor Daniella Tilbury, Vice-Chancellor and CEO of the University added:
“The University is most grateful to Mr Alwani, and to the Foundation, for its generous contribution. With this new space, we launch the Student Experience Office and corresponding initiatives that seek to provide a complete University experience for students enrolled at the University.”
The University Student Experience Office will encourage students to participate in voluntary activities that will bring community benefit and also assist with developing communication and relationship building skills, which are important for employability. From the moment of enrolment, the University will create opportunities for students to connect and develop a sense of belonging, promoting faith-based connections, participation in sports clubs and events, engagement with environmental citizenship projects and participation in cultural and charity events.
