Amos Federico, Director & Marine Consultant, has provided us with his perspective on his maritime-related degree. Amos mentions how his studies built a stable base for his current success.

About Amos

Amos studied Nautical Science at a UK Maritime Academy. He served as deck officer on a variety of vessels from oil tankers, passenger ships and high-speed crafts. On attaining his masters COC, he worked for the Ministry of Defence as a Marine Services Officer and Tug Master for 8 years. He was also involved in casualty surveys and investigations of all kinds for H&M Underwriters and P&I Clubs, including engine and propulsion system damages, collisions and grounding.

Career Progression

Amos then joined an offshore and maritime marpol waste management company as a Fleet Manager, Designated Person Ashore and Master for three years. Afterwards, he joined the Gibraltar Maritime Administration as a flag state surveyor, customer services manager for ship management companies operating vessels under the ISM code (general cargo, oil/chemical tankers, containers etc), port state control officer and maritime accident investigator.
In 2015, he joined the family business which specialised in fuel and liquid cargo surveying in Gibraltar and various other strategic ports in mainland Europe, the Canary Islands and Greece and also operated service craft within the Port of Gibraltar.

“My studies provided me with a positive start, opened the pathway and gave me the underpinning knowledge to be able to fulfil a variety of the roles available within the maritime industry”.

– Director & Marine Consultant, Amos Federico

Growth of his business

Shortly after joining the commercial maritime world, Amos co-founded AMC Ship Managers & Marine Consultants Ltd, which provided him with the opportunity to be involved with the developing, implementation and monitoring of safety management systems onboard a new build oil tanker that will be operating in Oman and a commercially operated yacht built in Viareggio Italy. In addition, he carries out vessel internal ISM / ISPS internal audits providing advice for one of Germany’s major ship owners.
In 2018, his firm partnered with a global marine technical consultancy firm providing services such as marine insurance, which provided the opportunity to provide services in a much broader geographical region including Spain, Portugal, Canary Islands, Western Mediterranean, North and West Africa.

What was it that led you down this career path?

Having grown up in a family of seafarers was the main reason which created an initial fascination with the maritime industry.

I am privileged to say that having studied a maritime career has allowed me to build a solid, exciting, varied career working and providing a wide scope of marine surveying, consultancy and auxiliary services not only at my home port but also internationally.
