Matthew, Director & Marine Consultant, has spoken to us about his profession.  His experiences throughout his career serve as an interesting insight into the world of Maritime for all interested, and show just how much success can be achieved in this field.

Studies and Experiences

Matthew studied a Master of Engineering degree in Ship Science (Naval Architecture) at University. He joined Lloyd’s Register Classification Society as a graduate trainee and worked for 11 years as a ship surveyor in London, Cadiz, Lisbon, (Ulsan) South Korea and Gibraltar. He was involved in existing ship and new building surveys.
He also gained experience as a flag state surveyor whilst working for the Gibraltar Maritime Administration carrying out ISM / ISPS audits and maritime accident investigations. Similarly, he was involved in numerous casualty surveys and investigations, including engine failures, collision, grounding and fire damages whilst working for H&M Underwriters and P&I Clubs

Career Progression

In 2014 Mathew was appointed Managing Director of an offshore and maritime marpol waste management company, where he was given the project of selecting new building shipyards in China, Turkey and India for a new build project. A year later, he co-founded AMC Ship Managers & Marine Consultants Ltd which allowed him to pursue his ambitions of forming a marine consultancy firm and providing the opportunity to be involved in Oil tanker new build projects in Turkey, India and Oman.

Going Global

A partnership in 2018 with Evdemon & Partners, combined with Matthew’s experience of Spanish and Portuguese shipyards and repair facilities as well as strong ties with Gibraltar & Spanish maritime Authorities and community, allowed expansion into marine insurance provision and with it the capacity to provide services in a much broader geographical region including Spain, Portugal, Canary Islands, Western Mediterranean, North and West Africa.

What was it that led you down this career path?

“It was my dad’s passion for shipping and working at the Gibraltar dockyard that at a young age gave me the exposure to such an interesting industry. My studies provided me with a positive start to my career. Since graduating I have been able to build a solid and rewarding career working in Gibraltar and internationally and has allowed me to be part of a global network of marine technical consultants”.

“Studying a maritime career has allowed me to enjoy my professional life to the fullest as work for me is like a hobby which I look forward to everyday”
