Research Internship Testimonial | Sophie Johnson | Princeton University

24 July 2025

I have always enjoyed putting myself in situations where I am forced to learn and experience a new way of doing things I felt so comfortable with in the past. I knew that, by coming to a place that I was so unfamiliar with, I would be able to learn so much more than I would otherwise. This along with the extremely unique marine environment is what drew me to Gibraltar.

Thank you to Dolphin Adventure for facilitating our dolphin trips.

What attracted you to undertake a research internship at the University of Gibraltar?

I have always enjoyed putting myself in situations where I am forced to learn and experience a new way of doing things I felt so comfortable with in the past. I knew that, by coming to a place that I was so unfamiliar with, I would be able to learn so much more than I would otherwise. This along with the extremely unique marine environment is what drew me to Gibraltar.

What research did you conduct for your internship?

I took observational data of dolphin behaviours as well as collecting audio recordings of dolphin communication using a hydrophone provided to me by the university.

What transferable skills can you take away from your time at UniGib?

I believe that this experience gave me new skills in marine field research as well as new knowledge of data collection and analyzing platforms that will be very helpful to me in the future if I continue to pursue a career in research.

What are your long-term career ambitions?

I would like to work towards a PhD in the marine sciences hopefully allowing me to then pursue either a career in research or a professor position. Regardless of where I go I know I want to stay in the marine field as I go forward.
