12 August 2025

My passion is marine species conservation and environmental policy. This internship has given me the opportunity to explore both passions and contribute to the ongoing marine conservation research in Gibraltar. I will take these experiences with me as I continue to pursue a higher education degree in marine science.

What attracted you to undertake a research internship at the University of Gibraltar?

A year ago, I learned about the University of Gibraltar’s marine science program and was immediately drawn to it. I wanted an internship that would give me field experience and push me out of my comfort zone. After learning new skills in a new country, I can say UniGib has fulfilled that want.

What research did you conduct for your internship?

I deployed Baited Remote Underwater Videos (BRUVs) from the university to compare the fish species diversity and abundance at two different locations – the Marine Conservation Zone and Rosia Bay. Following this research, I used video annotation software and R package iNext to quantify the abundance and diversity data.

What transferable skills can you take away from your time at UniGib?

Before this internship, I had never used BRUVs. I believe this is a skill that will facilitate further policy implementation to protect marine ecosystems. After learning about the collaboration that occurs between all stakeholders – the fishers, government, and university, I feel confident in advocating for this work at my college and using these skills in the future.

What are your long-term career ambitions?

My passion is marine species conservation and environmental policy. This internship has given me the opportunity to explore both passions and contribute to the ongoing marine conservation research in Gibraltar. I will take these experiences with me as I continue to pursue a higher education degree in marine science.
