Student Perspective | Jacob McGowan- Griffin | BSc (Hons) Maritime Science

Jacob McGowan- Griffin heard about the BSc (Hons) Maritime Science programme through our website and was excited to hear that we were offering MCA-approved maritime courses. He has had a long-standing passion for the field of Engineering and thought this programme would give him an advantageous start into a career path in this industry.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Gibraltar?

I chose to study at the University of Gibraltar as it is my local university. From hearing about the University’s opening, I found that they were going to open the Maritime School and start to offer MCA-approved maritime courses.
After attending an open evening hosted by Aaron Lopez, I knew that the course was for me as it will give me an advantageous start into a career path and industry that I have had long-standing passions for, especially in the field of Engineering.

What has been your experience of the programme so far?

So far, the programme has been excellent. I have had the chance to be a part of webinars with experienced professionals in the industry, attend conferences revolving around our local maritime industries, and courses that will make me a more knowledgeable, safety-forward and environmentally conscious seafarer.

How have you found student life at the University of Gibraltar?

Student life is great. I feel that I have made close connections and friends amongst my cohort, my tutors and all other attendees of the University of Gibraltar. In the short time I have been studying there so far, I have settled into studying well, and alongside gaining knowledge, have found myself ever-more passionate about the Maritime industry. I must praise the number of certifications and materials available to us at the Maritime School.

What are planning on doing once you graduate?

I plan on working as a Marine Engineer or Marine Surveyor within Gibraltar and the surrounding area.

What would you say to someone interested in studying at the University of Gibraltar?

I would highly recommend the University and its ever-expanding range of courses.
