Student Perspective | Spencer Jooste | BSc (Hons) Maritime Science

I would recommend this programme because the University is a very small place, and you can get exactly what you want out of the lectures and learning. Everybody here is very helpful.

What brought you to the University of Gibraltar?

I chose the University of Gibraltar because of how the degree is set up. During the three-year degree, I can get my Certificate of competency to be an engineer while also getting my BSc. To the best of my knowledge, I do not know of any other place that can give me so much in so little time. Everything can get moved quickly, whereas it would have taken most others 6 to 7 years to get all that. The weather also played a massive part for me, the sea is a lot like Cape Town but doesn’t drop below 0 degrees, so Gibraltar’s marina is ideal.

How has your experience of the programme and the University been so far?

It has been great so far. The university staff were big advocates for the students participating in sports across the rock. Being from a rugby background, I decided to take them up on that offer. I have gotten involved with Rugby while being here for a season and a half now. I feel the sports aspect played a large part in making Gibraltar feel more like home, and I was able to make friends and better enjoy my time at uni.

As part of your degree you have spent some time on placement; what was that like?

I enjoyed the placement quite a lot, and it gave me a good idea of what my life will be like after finishing my degree working on ships. I am very excited for what’s to come.

What do you expect to do once you graduate?

So I plan to work on ships for a while as an engineer and then potentially do a master’s degree and settle down in Gibraltar.
