As a Beacon Professor, Trinidad is committed to delivering at least one open lecture annually at the University of Gibraltar. His inaugural lecture, marking his introduction as Professor, was a testament to his profound expertise and his dedication to elucidating complex legal histories and their modern implications.
The University of Gibraltar recently hosted a significant lecture by newly appointed Beacon Professor Jamie Trinidad KC, shedding light on the enduring dispute over the waters surrounding Gibraltar. This inaugural lecture offered a historical overview, tracing the origins and developments of this contentious issue, which has been a focal point in the broader sovereignty dispute.
Throughout his lecture, Professor Trinidad KC, a distinguished legal scholar and practitioner, outlined the significant shifts in the British maritime claim’s physical extent and legal justification since 1704. He detailed how, for centuries, the heart of the conflict was an anchorage in front of Gibraltar’s northern fortifications, adjacent to a section of the Spanish coastline—an area Britain no longer claims. This historical insight provided context to the evolving nature of the dispute.
The lecture also delved into the military and diplomatic dimensions of the conflict, showing how these aspects have progressed alongside key developments in the international law of the sea. From the early concept of ‘cannon shot’ jurisdiction to the modern United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
By examining the dispute through a historical lens, Professor Trinidad KC provided valuable insights into the present state of affairs and potential future developments. His expertise and deep understanding of international law offered a nuanced perspective on this long-standing issue.
Professor Jamie Trinidad KC, who was appointed as a Beacon Professor at the University of Gibraltar in 2023, has an impressive background.
