This new equipment will be a valuable resource for our PhD and Master’s students, offering key functionalities such as:

  • Rapid Prototyping for Experimental Design: Allowing students to quickly create custom parts and apparatus for lab experiments, reducing dependence on external manufacturers and speeding up research timelines.
  • Cost-Effective Customisation: Enabling affordable production of bespoke models, tools, and fixtures tailored to specific research needs, supporting iterative testing and refinement.
  • Enhanced Visualisation: Helping create tangible 3D models for data representation and prototypes, improving communication of complex ideas in presentations and projects.

Housed within the University laboratory, the 3D printer will be a useful tool for students engaged in research. Users will acknowledge FOGHS’ support in their dissertations and other research-related outputs.

Peter Hucker, FOGHS treasurer, said:

‘We are pleased the University could use the funds the Society has donated in this way. One of our key aims, as a UK based Charity, is to encourage continuous improvement in the understanding of Gibraltar’s physical, cultural and environmental heritage. The work done by PhD and MSc students in Gibraltar plays an important part in that and so we are delighted to support their research.’

Since 2017, FOGHS has generously supported the University’s PhD Programme through annual bursaries. In 2022, this support expanded to include students in the MSc in Marine Science and Climate Change and the MSc in Environmental Science and Climate Change. To date, FOGHS donations have benefitted 24 postgraduate research projects across various disciplines, 15 at Master’s level and 9 at PhD level, all of them under the common aim of protecting Gibraltar’s unique heritage and environment.

The addition of the 3D printer is another valuable resource for our students made possible by FOGHS. The University would like to extend its sincere gratitude to FOGHS for their continued commitment and support.
