The University of Gibraltar has received strong international visibility through the Darwin Plus Newsletter, June 2026, which highlights impactful environmental projects across the UK Overseas Territories. Five University-led initiatives were featured, highlighting the global relevance of Gibraltar-based research and its tangible benefits for local conservation and community engagement.
Among the projects showcased is Growing Coral in a Changing Climate (DPL00136), which focuses on adaptive coral restoration techniques. This work not only helps rebuild vulnerable marine ecosystems but also strengthens local expertise in protecting Gibraltar’s reefs as climate conditions evolve. Read more.
Equally significant is A Future for Gibraltar’s Oysters (DPL00057), where researchers combine citizen science with ecological surveys to identify habitable zones for oyster restoration. This collaborative approach enhances environmental awareness while supporting biodiversity recovery. Read more.
The newsletter also highlighted Building Monkey Conservation Expertise (DPLUS217), a project dedicated to improving the management of Gibraltar’s iconic Barbary macaque population. By developing systems and local skills, the initiative ensures sustainable conservation of one of the territory’s most recognisable species. Read more.
At Windmill Hill Flats, Small Site, Big Discoveries (DPL00044) has revealed unexpectedly rich insect biodiversity. These findings are reshaping scientific understanding of the site and emphasising the ecological importance of even small habitats. Read more.
Finally, A Portal to Gibraltar’s Biodiversity (DPL00109) provides a valuable resource hub, making biodiversity data more accessible to researchers, policymakers, and the wider public, further strengthening informed environmental decision-making. Read more.
Together, these projects demonstrate the University of Gibraltar’s growing role as a leader in applied environmental research. Their inclusion in the Darwin Plus Newsletter not only reflects academic excellence but also highlights meaningful, community-focused outcomes that resonate far beyond Gibraltar’s shores.
