The University of Gibraltar has been selected to host the first outreach event of the International Sea Power Conference 2025, following the signing of a new strategic partnership with the Council on Geostrategy.
Taking place on Tuesday 23rd September 2025 at the University’s Europa Point Campus, the event marks a significant milestone for both the University and Gibraltar as a whole. It places the Rock at the heart of a prestigious international programme that explores the future of maritime skills, global security and the evolution of the maritime industry.
Welcoming the announcement, Aaron Lopez, Head of the University’s Maritime Academy, said:
“We are delighted that the University of Gibraltar has been chosen to host the first outreach event of the International Sea Power Conference 2025. This recognition reflects not only our academic strengths but also Gibraltar’s strategic importance in global maritime affairs. Through our Maritime School and Academy, complemented by our innovative degree programmes, we are shaping the next generation of maritime leaders. This event provides an opportunity to showcase those achievements while connecting Gibraltar with the wider international dialogue on sea power and maritime security.”
Celebrating the partnership, Viktorija Starych-Samuoliene, Co-founder (Strategy) at the Council on Geostrategy, said:
“We are excited to work with the University of Gibraltar to deliver the first university partnership event of the International Sea Power Conference 2025. This partnership brings academic excellence to a policy-shaping maritime discussion, engaging the future leaders of the naval domain. We celebrate this and look forward to this event as a strong start to the rich programme of engagements over the coming months.”
The International Sea Power Conference 2025 is the Royal Navy’s annual flagship event, organised by the London-based Council on Geostrategy. Each year, it brings together over 200 participants from across the maritime, political, business, and academic sectors to debate the future of sea power.
As part of the outreach programme, selected universities host regional events designed to engage the next generation of maritime leaders. In 2024, these were held at Cambridge, Lancaster, and Glasgow. In 2025, the University of Gibraltar will have the honour of launching the series, showcasing its role as a Maritime Centre of Excellence.
With keynote addresses, panel discussions and opportunities for students and industry leaders to connect with policymakers and experts, the event promises to deliver a rich and forward-looking dialogue. It will not only highlight Gibraltar’s academic achievements but also reinforce its strategic importance as a maritime gateway at the entrance to the Mediterranean.
