On 31st May, Dr Leon G. Leanse, who is the Research Programme Coordinator at our University, delivered an invited presentation at the VI Online Forum on Light-Based Technologies in Health, hosted from Brazil and delivered virtually via Zoom. Dr Leanse was selected as the sole international speaker in recognition of his extensive research and expertise in antimicrobial blue light therapy and as one of the first to uncover its empirical mechanisms.
In his talk, Dr Leanse highlighted the functions and limitations of conventional antimicrobials, as well as the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance. He introduced antimicrobial phototherapy, including photodynamic therapy and ultraviolet radiation, before focusing on antimicrobial blue light therapy. Dr Leanse explained how chromophores (molecules that absorb blue light), such as porphyrins, generate reactive oxygen species (ROS; toxic versions of oxygen that can damage microbial cells), effectively eliminating pathogens. He also shared insights from collaborative research with Dr Tianhong Dai, Dr Carolina dos Anjos, and other collaborators that revealed the complex processes underpinning antimicrobial blue light therapy. In addition, he referenced findings from the Cheng Lab at Boston University regarding microbial targets such as catalase and granadaene. Dr Leanse concluded by emphasising the potential for synergistic effects as a direct consequence of understanding the underlying mechanisms.
Thank you to the organisers of the conference and everyone who contributed to this lively and insightful discussion!
