Biography

Bernabé Gómez is a Lecturer in the School of Marine and Environmental Sciences at the University of Gibraltar. His research combines coastal engineering, applied mathematics, and marine science to improve understanding of coastal processes and support evidence-based environmental management.

He holds an MSc in Coastal Engineering from the University of Cantabria (IH Cantabria), a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Cardiff University, and completed postdoctoral research in Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

His research focuses on numerical modelling, field observations, and data analysis to investigate coastal hydrodynamics, wave processes, sediment and pollutant transport, coastal flooding and erosion, and tsunami hazards. He is particularly interested in developing numerical models and data-driven approaches to improve coastal hazard forecasting, as well as the design and optimisation of nature-based solutions for climate adaptation and coastal resilience.

His research also extends to underwater acoustics, where he investigates the use of ocean acoustic signals to monitor marine activity ranging from marine mammals to earthquakes and submarine landslides, with the aim of developing complementary technologies for tsunami early warning systems

Role Description

Bernabé is a Lecturer in the School of Marine and Environmental Sciences at the University of Gibraltar. As Module Leader, he teaches across the MSc in Marine Science & Climate Change and the BSc in Applied Marine Science.

Alongside his teaching, he leads research on coastal hazards, marine ecosystems, data science and numerical modelling. He is also a Research Fellow with the American Geophysical Union (AGU), where he leads a community-based water quality monitoring project in the Rímac and Chillón river basins in Lima, Peru, in collaboration with local communities and scientific partners.
