Research Background

Dr Mark Sanchez has recently been appointed as an Academic Lecturer at the University of Gibraltar. He is a Gibraltarian author and academic that is based in the United Kingdom. Dr Sanchez has written three novels on Gibraltar – The Escape Artist, Solitude House and Jonathan Gallardo – as well as numerous stories, essays, articles and books of non-fiction. Dr Sanchez moved to the UK to study English Literature and subsequently took BA, MA and PhD degrees at the University of Leeds. He completed his studies in 2004 with a thesis exploring perceptions of ‘hispanicity’ in Elizabethan and Jacobean literature. Over the years Dr Sanchez has talked about issues of Gibraltarian identity on radio progammes such as the BBC World Service’s ‘The Cultural Frontline’, ABC Australia’s ‘Late Night Live’ and Antena Caro’s ‘Lletres Ebrenques’. He is currently writing two pieces of literature, ‘Ballad’ and ‘Manic Oceanic’, which are due to be released at the end of 2020.

Research Interests

Mark’s writing focuses on Gibraltarian identity politics and on the geopolitical challenges facing the Rock and its inhabitants. He is also interested in borders, the interrelation between masculinity and coloniality, national stereotypes and colonial/post-colonial discourses of ‘otherness’.
