The University successfully convened an Open Day for the over 55s on Friday 3rd June between 9.30am to 2.30pm. A total of 138 potential students visited throughout the Open Day. There were a number of talks on the range of courses available, which included; the Gibraltar History Lecture Series, Art – Opening your Eyes, Conversational Italian for Beginners, Introduction to Wine Around the World and a selection of Culinary Classes. Each talk was approximately 20 minutes and gave prospective students an insight into what the course would entail and what it had to offer.
The tutors and visiting speakers were kept busy answering and discussing the content of the courses. This Open Day was an initiative of the Silver Education Group, which consists of a small group of over 55s from different walks of life, who are advising the University with regards to its short course provision.
In deciding which courses to offer, the University is working together with the Silver Education Group following consultation with the public via a questionnaire as well as holding an awareness day in March at the Piazza. In addition to the courses offered there will also be three summer initiatives, one of which is the Gibraltar History Lecture Series which shall be held every Friday, starting on the 1st of July finishing on the 2nd September. The Gibraltar History Lecture series is free to over 55’s whilst other course fees starting from £125.00 and ranging up to £250.00.
