About this course

The University of Gibraltar is the only accredited centre for Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualifications in Gibraltar. The AAT accounting and bookkeeping qualifications provide practical, internationally recognised finance and accountancy skills, that can open doors for you in any industry across the world.
AAT Accounting Qualifications are offered at three levels; Certificate, Advanced and Professional. They provide you with the perfect route to propel you into the world of accountancy and finance.

What is AAT?

AAT is a professional body for vocational accountants, offering qualifications within a progressive structure which entitle those who have completed the exams and obtained relevant supervised work experience to become an accountant.

Course Delivery

The University will be offering the following Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Q2022 Qualifications for the academic year 2024/2025:
  1. Level 2 Certificate in Accounting
  2. Level 3 Diploma in Accounting
  3. Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting

Course Structure

Level 2 Certificate in Accounting

The Certificate level consists of four mandatory units:

  • Introduction to Bookkeeping
  • Principles of Bookkeeping Controls
  • The Business Environment
  • Principles of Costing

Level 3 Diploma in Accounting

The Diploma level consists of four mandatory units:

  • Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements
  • Management Accounting Techniques
  • Business Awareness
  • Tax Processes for Business

Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting

The Professional Diploma level offered at the University consists of following units:

  • Applied Management Accounting
  • Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements
  • Internal Accounting Systems and Control
  • Cash and Financial Management
  • Audit and Assurance

Length of Study

Level 2 Certificate in Accounting and the Level 3 Diploma in Accounting will be offered part-time (four hours per week over one Academic Year). Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting will be offered part-time four hours per week over two Academic Years (finishing December 2025).

Who are these courses for?

AAT is open to everyone, you don’t need previous qualifications or experience, and you can work at a pace that suits your lifestyle. Whether you’re looking for your first job in accountancy, or simply want to enhance your existing accounting skills, AAT will give you the training you need.

How will the course be delivered?

The course will be offered on a part-time basis and will commence as from Monday 2nd September 2024, subject to minimum numbers being met.
Sessions are scheduled to take place twice a week from 18:00 – 20:00 in one of our campuses, at Europa Point.
Examinations are scheduled at 10:00am on campus (timing could be subject to change).
Level 2 sessions and Level 3 sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Level 4 sessions are held on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Entry Profile

No specific qualifications are required nor working experience undertaken in an accounting role, although the latter would be of benefit. You need to be capable with numbers and have organisational skills. The University may ask you to undertake a diagnostic assessment to determine your level of English competency prior to enrolling in the course. Completion of Level 2, 3 and 4 sequentially is highly recommended.

Fees

Fees differ per level and they are directly payable to the University of Gibraltar. Please find below the fees for academic year 2024/2025.

AAT Registration fees

You must register with AAT separately.  We encourage you to register as soon as you start the course. Registration membership fees are to be paid directly by you to the AAT, please refer to www.aat.org.uk. Each level will require a different registration fee. Membership must be secured in order to sit assessments and access study support resources via the AAT Lifelong Learning Portal:

Level 2 Certificate in Accounting – £180 (Deadline for registration 22nd October 2024)

Level 3 Diploma in Accounting- £235 (Deadline for registration 15th November 2024)

Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting- £251 (Deadline for registration 13th December 2024)

Course Manuals

Course textbooks are not provided. Students may wish to purchase course textbooks to support their learning, and these can be ordered directly from Osborne books.

Osborne Book Shop

For those currently studying AAT will be aware that there is a transition and no automatic transfer  between qualifications AQ2016 to AQ2022.

Due to the content changes with the qualifications and changes to the registration format, there will be no direct transfer between AQ2016 and Q2022.

If students wish to cease studying AQ2016 and finish studying a qualification on Q2022, they will need to register for the equivalent qualification, paying the one-off registration fee.

AAT advise all students to continue to study and complete their current qualification on the AQ2016 version. Deadline to complete the qualification is 30th September 2023. Please email: profdev@unigib.edu.gi should you require any further information.
