About this course

Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT): Concepts, Applications & Regulation blends clear theory with hands-on practice to build confidence in how blockchain works and how to use it safely.

Day 1 establishes the foundations – blocks and hashes, keys and wallets, consensus and finality – before comparing major architectures (Layer-1/Layer-2, EVM and non-EVM, permissioned and permissionless) and common threat models. Through guided labs you will set up a training wallet, execute a testnet transaction, and use a block explorer to verify activity, read basic contract state and interpret events.

Day 2 moves up the stack to real-world applications. We examine centralised and decentralised exchanges, AMMs, oracles, bridges and decentralised storage, alongside governance and custody approaches (including multi-sig/MPC) and the operational controls that organisations should apply in practice. Short case studies provide a structured way to evaluate use-cases, weighing value, feasibility, compliance and risk.

Throughout, we situate DLT within the Gibraltar, UK and EU regulatory context, highlighting key obligations and supervisory themes relevant to adoption. The course concludes with a brief multiple-choice knowledge check to consolidate learning and support certification.

GANT has been established to inspire, cultivate and promote Financial Technology in Gibraltar, aiming to provide a versatile association which can foster personal development, education, and networking opportunities.

Who is the course for?

This course is open to anyone with an interest in distributed ledger technology (DLT), regardless of background. It is designed for participants who want to build confidence in blockchain fundamentals and safe on-chain practice.

It is particularly relevant for:

  • Regulators & policy makers seeking an applied understanding of DLT to inform supervision and rule-making.
  • Compliance, risk, and audit professionals (e.g., MLROs, Heads of Risk/Compliance) needing confidence in blockchain fundamentals, analytics, and controls.
  • Legal and corporate advisers supporting clients on tokenisation, custody, and DLT-enabled products.
  • Business leaders, product managers, and project owners evaluating use-cases or commissioning proofs-of-concept.
  • Engineers and data/IT professionals new to Web3 needing structured foundations and safe operational practices.
  • Students, career changers, and professionals exploring blockchain for the first time as part of their personal or professional development.

Course Aims

By the end of the two days, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain DLT fundamentals — how blocks, consensus, and cryptographic primitives create shared state and trust minimisation.
  2. Differentiate major architectures — EVM vs non-EVM chains, L1 vs L2, permissioned vs permissionless, and typical enterprise patterns.
  3. Operate safely on-chain — generate and secure keys, configure a wallet, submit a basic transaction, and verify it on a block explorer.
  4. Interpret tokens and smart contracts — understand common token standards (fungible/NFT), read basic contract state/functions, and recognise typical risks.
  5. Evaluate Web3 components — role of exchanges (centralised/decentralised), oracles, bridges, and decentralised storage—and their risk/assurance implications.
  6. Assess governance, security, and risk — identify attack vectors, custody models (incl. multi-sig/MPC), and apply foundational risk controls.
  7. Map regulatory touchpoints — outline key Gibraltar/UK/EU obligations relevant to DLT use (e.g., AML/CFT themes, market integrity, consumer protection).
  8. Appraise use-cases critically — apply a simple decision framework (value, feasibility, compliance, risk) to prioritise DLT initiatives and plan a PoC.
