The Updated Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (UFPFF) STCW course is a refresher program for seafarers to maintain essential fire safety skills in line with STCW requirements. It reinforces knowledge of fire prevention, hazard awareness, and safe onboard practices. The course conforms with section A-VI/1- 2 of the STCW Code.

A blend of theory development and practical experience that seafarers on completion will have demonstrated competence in preventing and responding to onboard fires, ensuring the safety of personnel and vessels. The course builds on and revisits practical training in firefighting techniques, use of equipment, breathing apparatus to extinguish various fires of size and intensity and emergency response procedures including casualty rescue in smoke filled enclosed spaces. Participants also practice teamwork and coordination during simulated fire scenarios.
Outcome 1: The learner is able to maintain the required standard of competence in fire prevention and fire fighting.
Both the theory paper needs to be passed at 70% and successful observation of the practical elements of the course must be passed to be awarded the certificate.
An MCA approved Certificate of Updated Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting meeting the requirements laid down in:
Regulation VI/1, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/1, paragraphs 3 and 4.2 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended and has also met the additional criteria specified in the STCW Convention and Code, applicable to the issue of this certificate
will be awarded on successful completion of the course.
The 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention 1978 stipulate that seafarers are required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standards of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities regarding
Boiler suits and boots will be provided but we recommend that you wear appropriate clothing underneath which will not suffer from the taint of smoke. Thick socks are advisable. PPE will be provided. If you wear glasses you will need to remove these, therefore contact lenses are advisable. Please remove all jewellery.
