STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility course is set up to offer a basic introduction for prospective seafarers in safety procedures and accident prevention while informing them on the employment conditions and working environments that they can expect of merchant ships, while on the half day course.

About this course

Delegates are introduced to key principles of safe working practices including helping all to understand cultural awareness, respect among crew members and the importance of maintaining a positive and professional attitude in often challenging conditions. The course will cover the following through videos, group discussions and trainer-led presentations:

  • How to comply with emergency procedures onboard a vessel
  • How to take precautions to prevent pollution to the marine environment
  • How to follow safe working practices
  • How to contribute to effective communications onboard ship
  • How to contribute to effective human relationships onboard ship
  • Understand the causes of fatigue and know the necessary actions to control fatigue
  • Preventing and responding to violence and harassment, including bullying, sexual harassment and sexual assault.

Outcomes

  • Outcome 1:  The learner knows how to comply with emergency procedures on board a vessel.

Assessment

Theory paper needs to be passed at 70%

Certification

An MCA approved  Certificate of Proficiency in  Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities  meeting the requirements laid down in:

Regulation VI/1, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/1, paragraph 2.1.4 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended

will be awarded on successful completion of the course.

Revalidation

Not required, however some shipping companies may stipulate that the updated PSSR course from December 2025, is completed.  This course complies.

Pre-requisites

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Proof of identity, photo ID to be provided (passport, National ID card, Seaman’s Discharge book).

Fees

£130

The University cannot guarantee places on this course which may be limited due to class size and in order to ensure quality of teaching. The course will be delivered subject to minimum numbers being met.
