Part of the mandatory Basic Safety Training, STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST) gives delegates the training needed to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment. Able to be booked as an individual course. The course conforms with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code.

About this course

The course will give seafarers the relevant knowledge, understanding and proficiency to safeguard themselves and others onboard under international regulations, providing the training needed to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment. Practical elements include:

  • Correctly don a lifejacket
  • Correctly don and use an immersion suit
  • Jump from height into the water
  • Swim while wearing a life jacket
  • Right an inverted life raft while wearing a life jacket
  • Keep afloat without a life jacket
  • Board a survival craft from the water while wearing a life jacket unassisted

*Non-swimmers can take part in this training

Outcomes

Outcome 1:  The learner knows the main types of maritime emergencies.

Outcome 2:  The learner knows the survival equipment used during a maritime emergency.

Outcome 3:  The learner understands the principles of survival during  a maritime emergency.

Outcome 4:  The learner knows how to abandon ship during a maritime emergency.

Outcome 5: The learner knows how to be able to survive in the water during  a maritime emergency.

Outcome 6: The learner knows how to use a survival craft during a maritime emergency.

Assessment

Both the theory paper needs to be passed at 70% and successful observation of the practical elements of the course must be passed to be awarded the certificate.

Certification

An MCA approved  Certificate of Proficiency in  Personal Survival Techniques meeting the requirements laid down in:

Regulation VI/1, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/1, paragraph 2.1.1.1 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended

will be awarded on successful completion of the course.

Revalidation

The 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention 1978 stipulate that seafarers are required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standards of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities regarding emergency, occupational safety and survival functions.

Pre-requisites

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Proof of identity, photo ID to be provided (passport, National ID card, Seaman’s Discharge book).
  • Complete the medical declaration prior to the start date of the course and on the day complete a fitness declaration. This form is shared with the trainers for awareness.   (Failure to complete the practical elements of the course will be deemed as a course failure.  Should you have any injuries that you feel may prevent you from completing the practical elements of the course, it is advisable to rebook at a later date once you are fit and well).   If you have any concerns regarding fitness, please contact us to discuss further.
  • Please remember swimwear to be worn with t-shirt and shorts and to bring a towel.

The University cannot guarantee places on this course which may be limited due to class size and in order to ensure quality of teaching. The course will be delivered subject to minimum numbers being met.
