About this Summer School

The Publishing in Addiction Science PhD Summer School, organised by the Centre of Excellence in Responsible Gaming at the University of Gibraltar, is a comprehensive and intensive learning experience designed for PhD students pursuing a degree in addiction science. The programme aims to provide participants with the skills and knowledge needed to produce high-quality publications from their research results and successfully complete their PhD journey.
Upon completion of the Publishing in Addiction Science PhD Summer School, candidates will have grown their knowledge in the following areas:
  • The fundamentals of writing an empirical research article.
  • Writing up a systematic review and a meta-analysis.
  • Writing a qualitative research article.
  • Tools and methods of referencing and citations.
  • Reporting statistical results.
  • Preparing diagrams and tables.
  • Choosing a title and writing an abstract.
  • The process and steps of publishing an article.
  • The Open Science movement.
  • Identifying the appropriate journal (discussing different selection criteria, understanding impact factors, identifying predatory journals).
  • Ethical considerations in publishing (collaboration, authorship, conflict of interest, funding, plagiarism).
  • Preparing a submission package and writing a cover letter.
  • The peer review process, the role of reviewers and responding to reviewers.
The summer school will feature speakers with extensive experience in publishing and reviewing articles, as well as editors from academic journals.

The Centre of Excellence in Responsible Gaming (CERG) is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research institute that aims to study the etiological factors of addictive disorders and contribute to their effective prevention and treatment.

Entry Requirements:

In order to be considered for this Summer School programme you must be a PhD students from any year** of their doctoral study or an early career researcher with a PhD degree with interests in Addiction Research.
In order to apply you must provide a Motivational Letter and Curriculum vitae (CV) along with your application.
In order to take part in this Summer School you must have a good grasp of the English language (This will be essential as all sessions will be delivered in English).
**Students starting their PhD in Autumn 2024 are also welcome.

Guided Trip to Tarifa

Tarifa is a small, peaceful town located at the southern point of the Iberian Peninsula. It is famous for its nearby beaches that offer a range of water sports activities. While here Summer School attendees will explore the restored fortress and enjoy some delicious Spanish cuisine during lunchtime.
Just a short distance away from Tarifa are the ruins of Baelo Claudia, one of Andalucía’s most significant and well-preserved Roman archaeological sites. You will be given the option to explore the extensive ruins which include a temple, forum, basilica, baths, aqueduct, and a large fish-salting factory. After a day of exploring, Summer School attendees can relax on the stunning beach or swim in the refreshing Atlantic before being transported back to Gibraltar.
