About this course

Our individual dates for STCW Basic Safety courses are still currently being arranged if you require to book separately.

Under STCW, all new entrants to the maritime industries are required to complete an STCW Basic Safety Training Week before joining a vessel.

It is made up of the following courses:

These courses can be taken individually or can be taken together in this cost saving package.

STCW requires all seafarers to receive familiarization and basic safety training or instruction in accordance with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code. The minimum requirements for familiarization and basic safety training are contained within the Basic Safety Training Week and meet the appropriate standard of competence.

Outcomes

Assessment

Please see the individual components for the assessment for each course. All of the five courses must be passed at the expected rate.

Certification

An MCA approved STCW certificate in Proficiency in four elements meeting the requirements laid down in:

Regulation VI/1, paragraph 1 and section A-V/1, paragraph 2.1 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended

Will be awarded on successful completion of the course.

An MCA approved certificate of Proficiency in Security Awareness complying with STCW Regulation VI/6, paragraph 1 Section A-V/6, paragraph 4 is also awarded but on a separate certificate.

Revalidation

The 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention 1978 stipulate that seafarers are required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standards of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities regarding emergency, occupational safety and survival functions.  Revalidation is required for PST and FPFF.

Pre-requisites

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • A medical declaration completed prior to the course delivery.   Please note that certain components require a level of fitness.   Should you have any injuries that you feel may prevent you from completing the practical elements of the course, it is advisable to rebook at a later date once you are fit and well).   If you have any concerns regarding fitness, please contact us to discuss further.
  • Proof of identity, photo ID to be provided (passport, National ID card, Seaman’s Discharge book).

The University cannot guarantee places on this course which may be limited due to class size and in order to ensure quality of teaching. The course will be delivered subject to minimum numbers being met.
