My project aims to investigate policies and best practices for reducing ship emissions and the impact of low-emission areas, called emission control areas or ECAs, on emissions via operational and technical measures. Furthermore, during my research project, I examined the issues and solutions for reducing emissions from the shipping industry and compliance with ECA restrictions using abatement technologies inside and outside its territory. Ship owners should employ the available approaches, calculation techniques, and emission reduction strategies to comply with the ECA-specific emission reduction rules. The problem of ship emissions is recognised globally, and scientists and policymakers have continuously sought ways to mitigate its negative environmental impacts efficiently and cost-effectively.
I used various methodologies to conduct my research, mainly a literature review via the Google Scholar search engine, to investigate the current impact of ship emissions on climate change, abatement technologies and the result of new legislation on the matter.
Carrying out the project taught me to be precise and clear in my data and facts. While conducting my research project, I learned to prepare and present my findings, think critically, and analyse a large amount of information. More generally, I improved my organisation and time management skills to complete this project on time.
In my project, two people provided me with an immense amount of help: my supervisor Dr. Awantha Dissanayake, Head of Marine Science and Climate Change at the University of Gibraltar, and my adviser Captain Sukhjit Singh, Head of the Maritime School at the University of Gibraltar. My supervisor advised and guided me during my project, helping me to overcome my times of stress. Captain Sukhjit Singh helped me understand precise maritime terminologies and helped me solve my questions regarding ship engines.
Over 80 % of international trade travels by water, and in recent years its negative impact on the environment has received increased attention. Global shipping releases dangerous emissions into the atmosphere, leading to global warming and ocean acidification. In addition, these emissions can cause cardiac illnesses and early mortality. Greater public awareness can help push policymakers to implement new legislation and improve the current situation in the shipping industry.
I hope this research will help educate the public on the implications of ship exhausts while also providing the maritime industry with accessible information on abatement technologies. I would also like to see this research highlight some of the shortcomings the scientific community and policymakers currently face in combating climate change. Furthermore, it will aid stakeholders in effectively correlating alternative energy sources and compliance strategies with reducing greenhouse gas emissions. I envision my thesis being used for education and awareness purposes involving ECAs for students, regulators, and shipping companies. My thesis can be used as a reference for an improved understanding of rules and regulations regarding ECAs. Inspiring and motivating governments to continue their fight against climate rule-breakers is and will continue to be an overarching goal for my work.
We are extremely proud of Chynara! She embarked on a research project which is very contemporary, highly relevant to industry and applicable in Gibraltar and beyond. Chynara learnt English within the last 3 years and has very rapidly learnt to read, synthesise and effectively communicate information from technical reports and scientific literature – testament to her tenacious character and willingness to continually improve. We thank the University of Gibraltar Language Centre for aiding Chynara in her development.
