Last week, the University hosted an engaging community lecture by Dr Ryan Asquez titled “Reconquista and Catholic Reformation? The case of Gibraltar and la Vera Cruz.”

Dr Asquez explored the cultural and religious significance of the confraternity and church of La Vera Cruz in sixteenth-century Gibraltar, utilizing wills from the Archivo Histórico Provincial de Cádiz to propose a timeline for their establishment and development. Through these wills, he examined how local dynamics shaped Gibraltar’s religious landscape, analysing the various contexts in which the church and confraternity emerged and evolved.
