" This course gave me the opportunity to explore and uncover potential opportunities that may exist locally. Gaining hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of environmental initiatives within my own community has always been of great interest to me."

What motivated you to choose Environmental Science as your field of study and what aspects of the Environmental Science programme appealed to you the most when applying?

I was particularly drawn to the embedded placement / practical option when applying for this course. Coming from Gibraltar, I initially believed there were limited opportunities or organisations related to environmental science in the area and so questioned what this course could offer. However, this course gave me the opportunity to explore and uncover potential opportunities that may exist locally. Gaining hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of environmental initiatives within my own community has always been of great interest to me.

What do you hope to do following on from studying Environmental Science?

I have always had a passion for science communication and public engagement, which began during my undergrad year in industry. Expanding my knowledge of environmental science will strengthen my ability to convey complex ideas effectively—a potential career path I am eager to explore. More recently, my growing interest in policy and environmental impact has broadened my perspective, sparking curiosity about consultancy work, or careers related to ecological services, and nature-based solutions as potential pathways.

What key hard skills have you developed so far during your studies?

Various skills such as data collection / gathering, analysis, processing and interpretation of scientific data developed through practical / fieldwork days and workshops – refining skills related to laboratory techniques, field sampling, surveying techniques and statistical analysis when using various computer software packages like SPSS, RStudio, PRIMER and all Microsoft applications.

Practical knowledge in environmental impact assessments (EIA), policy analysis, and sustainability planning / practices has also been further developed in various modules throughout my studies (like marine ecosystems and sustainability).

Technical writing and reporting skills has also been improved upon when preparing scientific reports, posters, technical reports and ecological tenders – some of which I had never even heard of before!

What ‘soft skills’ do you think you developed so far during your studies?

Confidence, public speaking and overall communication skills through conveying scientific concepts within written reports and presentations (like in journal clubs or classroom-based group activities).

Critical thinking, collaboration and teamwork skills when working on group projects and within fieldwork / practical days.

Networking and stakeholder engagement when building professional connections with policymakers and various environmental groups within Gibraltar like The Department of Environment, GONHS and Alameda Botanical Gardens.

Do you feel confident in applying these skills outside of an academic setting?

Yes, I feel confident in applying these skills outside of an academic setting, especially thanks to my experience on this course. The hands-on aspect and real-world application has given me the experience I need to feel confident in my abilities and in my work. I am eager to continue developing these skills in professional environments, whether in consultancy, research-driven roles or science communication, areas that require problem-solving, collaboration and effective communication – skills I can confidently say that I have developed throughout my studies.

Have you enjoyed any placement/practical activities? If so, what have you enjoyed the most?

I have really enjoyed the various placements and practicals I’ve undertaken throughout this course – most memorably, fox scat analysis! Although I initially expected it to be unpleasant or uninteresting (and smelly), I was surprised by how engaging it was to analyse the diets and consumption behaviours of Gibraltar’s foxes, especially given the diversity of their food sources. These hands-on, laboratory-based practicals have become some of my favourites, as they allow me to apply scientific techniques to real-world ecological studies.
