The University As A Regional Reference Point In Education For Sustainability

The University of Gibraltar hosted Ms Rocío Jiménez-Fontana as a visiting researcher during the month of July. Rocio holds a PhD in Education for Sustainability and is currently a lecturer at the University of Cadiz, Spain. Her teaching activity comprises undergraduate and postgraduate levels in connection with PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education), environmental education and the professional development of teachers. Her current research work includes sustainability in higher education, curricular sustainability and assessment systems, as well as teacher training.

With the aim of gaining knowledge and adding to her current research, she has focused her work on various areas underpinning Education for Sustainable Development over her four week stay in Gibraltar. She has established connections with researchers and professionals in the field of education locally and worked with the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, an Associate Campus of the University. Rocio has also liaised with University of Gibraltar researchers and PhD students to develop the scholarly inquiries into educational evaluation.

This collaboration will pave the way for stronger research links between the University of Gibraltar and University of Cadiz. Pathways are also being explored with other Universities in the region, in recognition of the leadership role played by the University of Gibraltar in Education for Sustainable Development.
