Podarcis vaucheri (the Andalusian Wall lizard) is the most common reptile found in Gibraltar, and will be the most familiar to the public. It was the subject of Professor Cortes’ D.Phil at Oxford in the early 1980s. In his Beacon Lecture Prof Cortes will revisit and update his original research, which remains unpublished. The lecture will summarise historical information on reptiles in Gibraltar. It will describe habitat preferences and look at the thermal conditions for activity of the lizard, as well as its morphology, foraging behaviour, predator avoidance strategies and general ecology and how these inter-relate. He will look at recent changes in habitats in Gibraltar and comment on the effects of this on the conservation status of reptiles and the wall lizard in particular.
Prof John Cortes MBE received his D.Phil. from Oxford University in 1983. He is an ecologist and zoologist, currently serving as the Minister for the Environment, Sustainability, Climate Change, and Education. He served as Director of the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens from 1991 until he took on governmental responsibilities in 2011. Prior to his political career, he worked as a civil servant, ultimately rising to the position of General Manager of the Gibraltar Health Authority from 1983 to 1991. Additionally, he served as a Magistrate for 17 years and was elected President of the Gibraltar Magistrates’ Association in 2009. In 2003, Prof Cortes was awarded an MBE for services to Ecology and the Environment. He also holds a DSc honoris causa from Kingston University.
