" I began my studies at the University of Gibraltar in September 2022 as part of the inaugural cohort of the BSc (Hons) Computing and Entrepreneurship programme. As a local student without much prior experience in business or tech, I was drawn to the course because it offered the chance to develop skills in both of these areas. Since then, I've had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through an internship, which led to my current full-time role as a CRM Executive at Playtech, a leading global iGaming company. I began my studies at the University of Gibraltar in September 2022 as part of the inaugural cohort of the BSc (Hons) Computing and Entrepreneurship programme. As a local student without much prior experience in business or tech, I was drawn to the course because it offered the chance to develop skills in both of these areas. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through an internship, which led to my current full-time role as a CRM Executive at Playtech, a leading global iGaming company. In this role, I work on player engagement, campaign strategy, and customer retention for international casino brands.
I was drawn to the unique combination of technical computing and real-world entrepreneurship that the programme offered. I wanted a degree that would equip me not just with hard technical skills, like coding, data analysis, and software development, but also with the strategic mindset needed to build value in a fast-paced, digital-first world. The idea of learning how to both develop digital products and understand the business models behind them really appealed to me. On top of that, the smaller class sizes and close-knit learning environment at the University of Gibraltar meant I had direct access to lecturers and more personalised support throughout my studies, something that made a huge difference to my confidence and growth.
The dual focus taught me how to approach challenges from both a technical and business perspective. This is helpful in my current role as, for example, when working on user experience or campaign automation, I’m able to understand both the system logic and the customer journey. It helped me become more solution-oriented and adaptive which are two qualities that are incredibly vital in the industry.
There wasn’t one specific module or project that shaped my path, but rather the overall depth and breadth of the course. We covered a wide range of topics across both computing and business, which gave me a strong foundation to explore different areas. Having that mix of technical and entrepreneurial learning helped me stay adaptable and made it easier to find where I fit best professionally.
I completed a summer placement at Playtech as a Casino Product Intern, which turned out to be a pivotal moment in my career. I had the opportunity to work with both the Product and CRM teams, gaining first-hand insight into how large-scale iGaming platforms function from both a development and customer engagement perspective. I was able to support real projects, attend team meetings, and see how product decisions were influenced by data and player behaviour. It gave me a real sense of how cross-functional teams operate in a fast-paced environment. The experience helped me grow professionally, boosted my confidence, and it even directly led to further opportunities at Playtech, including my current full-time role. It was genuinely career-defining.
From day one, the course was designed to be hands-on and practical, with a strong focus on developing the kind of skills employers actually look for. We weren’t just learning theory, we were putting it into practice! There was a strong focus on real-world assignments, group projects, presentations, and industry-linked tasks. Whether it was learning how to code, analyse data, or manage a digital product, everything we did had a clear application in the workplace. We were also introduced to tools and methodologies like Agile project management, which are used widely in tech companies today.
This kind of learning environment helped grow my confidence and made it much easier to transition into a professional role. When I started my placement, I already felt familiar with many of the workflows, expectations, and tools used. It gave me a real head start and made me feel like I could contribute from day one.
The business modules were just as important as the technical ones. They helped me understand the ‘why’ behind the work I do. In my role now, I often have to align CRM campaigns with key performance indicators, think about user behaviour and segmentation, and report on campaign effectiveness. Having that foundation in entrepreneurship, marketing, and business strategy means I can approach problems with a more holistic mindset. I’m not just executing tasks; I’m thinking strategically about how to create value for both the business and the customer. That balance of technical and business knowledge has made me much more effective in my role.
Say yes to every opportunity to learn and apply what you’re learning in real-life scenarios. Don’t worry if you’re not “techy” at first, the programme is built to support your growth. If you’re interested in launching your own venture or working in a dynamic industry like tech or gaming, this course will give you the tools, network, and mindset to do it.
