Education

About

The Education Research Hub focuses on understanding and strengthening education across policy, practice, leadership, and professional learning. With a strong emphasis on research of clear practical and societal relevance, the Hub’s work spans teacher education, educational leadership, curriculum and pedagogy, digital learning, doctoral education, social justice, and the broader policy contexts that shape educational opportunity.

Research within the Hub examines how educational systems, institutions, and practitioners respond to contemporary challenges in teaching, learning, and educational development. This includes work on teacher induction and professional support, educational theory and action research, mobile technology and digital pedagogy, doctoral supervision and academic writing, curriculum development, internationalisation and decolonisation in higher education, and questions of equity, access, and social justice in education policy. The Hub also engages critically with the wider structures influencing education, including policy reform, quasi-markets, private sector involvement in public service delivery, and global policy networks.

Situated within Gibraltar’s distinctive educational landscape, the Hub benefits from close engagement with schools, educators, and public sector partners. The collaboration with Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar’s Department of Education, is an important feature of the Hub’s work, supporting research and professional dialogue that connects educational scholarship with local priorities, system development, and practice-based improvement.

Dr Antonio Olmedo, Senior Researcher, Head of School of Education
Email:
antonio.olmedo@unigib.edu.gi
About:

Antonio’s research focuses on education policy, sociology and social theory, examining how policy reforms shape educational systems, and social inequalities. Influenced by the work of Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu, and Stephen Ball, my research analyses neoliberal policy networks, the role of new policy actors, and approaches to addressing social challenges in education. Particular attention is given to patterns of privatisation, competition, and school choice, and their implications for social justice and equality. My work also explores how neoliberal subjectivities are constructed among educators, leaders, and families, alongside the influence of global policy networks, philanthropy, and edu-businesses in shaping education policy.
