Why did you choose to study the BSc (Hons) Maritime Sciences with Cadetship programme and the University of Gibraltar?

I’ve always had an interest in maritime and working on the water as I love it, and with UK education away from home and all distractions, it could not have been better!

How would you describe your experience so far?

Since I embarked on my maritime journey at the University of Gibraltar, I have made many new friends and connections both within and outside of the industry, all of which have contributed to my personal and professional development. The lectures are highly engaging, and class sizes are small, which allows instructors to tailor their teaching to individual learning needs, helping students excel.

Can you share some highlights from your most recent placement?

During my most recent placement, I was aboard the VLCC MT Kassab, operated by the Saudi company Bahri. While on board, I undertook a wide variety of tasks, ranging from bridge watchkeeping and cargo operations to deck maintenance, such as painting. I was also responsible for tasks related to FFA (Fire Fighting Equipment) and LSA (Life Saving Apparatus), which are essential as they will be some of my first duties as a junior officer. I encountered many challenges during my time aboard, pushing myself to be the best I can be by applying the knowledge I gained in the classroom and enhancing it through hands-on experience onboard. It was an incredible opportunity, and I cannot wait for my final sea phase!

What are your career aspirations after graduation?

My aspirations are to become an officer on the cruise lines, preferably Royal Caribbean or Holland America, and reach Captain rank as soon as I can.

What advice would you give to future students looking to study the BSc Maritime Science with Cadetship programme at the University of Gibraltar?

It’s a challenging yet rewarding experience that combines academic knowledge with hands-on training at sea. Make the most of the expert guidance available at the University of Gibraltar. Stay dedicated, build strong teamwork skills, and be open to learning both in the classroom and on board. This programme will truly prepare you for a successful maritime career!
