Health & Sport Sciences

About

The Health & Sport Sciences Research Hub focuses on understanding and improving health, care, and wellbeing across clinical, community, and societal contexts. With a strong emphasis on applied research and professional practice, the Hub’s work spans areas including clinical medicine, nursing, infection prevention and control, social care, rehabilitation, dementia and palliative care, and the social and cultural dimensions of sport and leisure.

Research within the Hub examines how health and care systems, professionals, and communities respond to evolving challenges in healthcare delivery and population wellbeing. This includes work on minimally invasive and bariatric surgery, antimicrobial resistance and rapid infection diagnostics, nursing education and mentorship, dementia care, palliative and community-based care, child protection and social work practice, and musculoskeletal and lower-limb health. The Hub also explores the wider social and cultural contexts of sport, play, and leisure, examining how these shape wellbeing, identity, and community life.

Situated within a close-knit and distinctive community, Gibraltar provides an important setting for research on healthcare practice, professional relationships, and service delivery within small and interconnected populations. The Hub works closely with the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA), an associate campus of the University, enabling strong collaboration between academic researchers and healthcare professionals, and supporting research that connects local healthcare priorities with broader global discussions around health systems and patient care.

Dr Leon Leanse, Senior Researcher

Name:
Dr Leon Leanse, Senior Researcher
Email:
leon.leanse@unigib.edu.gi
About:

Dr Leanse’s research interests stem from his goal to lessen the negative impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) on public health. Leon is concerned with developing non-traditional antimicrobial approaches that effectively treat infectious diseases, without the threat of resistance development. He utilises biophotonics approaches (i.e., light applied to biological systems) for the treatment of antibiotic resistant (or ‘superbug’) infections. His interests also involve developing novel optical waveguides (e.g., light emitting microneedles that can deliver light interstitially) to treat more complicated infections.

About:

Jamesina’s research focuses on critically exploring the practice of palliative care in Gibraltar and identifying the factors that facilitate care provided by family caregivers at home. The study follows participatory action research (PAR) principles and is situated within a critical theory framework. PAR is a research method that aims to inquire with communities rather than on them and is closely linked to social change and collaborative action. The research process is strongly influenced by the compassionate communities movement and asset-based community development principles, seeking to enhance the understanding and effectiveness of palliative care within the local context.

Email:
researchoffice@unigib.edu.gi
About:

Sonal’s research addressed the growing challenge of dementia, a neurodegenerative condition that impairs cognitive and functional abilities, and explored how its impact unfolds over time. As the first study of its kind in Gibraltar, it followed 30 individuals with dementia over a 12-month period to assess changes in cognition, function, and quality of life. The research aimed to enhance understanding of holistic, therapeutic interventions within a local context, offering insights into how non-pharmacological approaches can support wellbeing in dementia care and respond to the broader implications of ageing populations.
