Emma, one of our Master in Marine Science and Climate Change graduates, spoke to us about her experience studying at Unigib and where she is now.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Gibraltar?

I chose the University of Gibraltar because the Masters in Marine Science and Climate Change course accepted relevant work experience. At the time I applied, I was employed as an Environmental Policy Advisor and wanted to obtain further scientific training to complement my Batchelor of Arts degree.

What are you doing now?

I’m currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Glasgow, researching the use of creative practice as a method for engaging communities with sustainability issues, such as climate change and Marine Protected Areas. My programme is a Collaborative Doctoral Award and therefore I am embedded within a charitable organisation to conduct my research.

How did you get there?

I found and applied for the PhD whilst I was writing up my Master’s thesis at the University of Gibraltar. The interview process was conducted over the summer and I began the PhD in October 2020. The training and research I had undertaken during my Masters was very relevant to the PhD and helped me greatly during the interview process.

Where would you like to see your career go?

At the moment, I’m focussed on finishing my PhD and haven’t thought much about the next steps! I would like to remain working in a role that is centred around sustainability and uses all of the knowledge I have gained during both my Masters and PhD. I’d hope to transition into industry, rather than remain in academia, and am fortunate that my PhD offers an embedded role at a charity in Scotland.
