On 19th March, we hosted a Public Research Lecture (Webinar), featuring an insightful talk by Natalie Muirhead-Davies, a PhD student at our University and Marine and Coastal Lead Advisor for Natural England, titled ‘Saving Seas on a Shoestring: A Case Study in Gibraltar.’

Natalie provided a comprehensive overview of the challenges that Gibraltar faces in meeting international marine conservation targets, particularly due to the limited resources available compared to the UK’s extensive programmes. She highlighted the key issues encountered, including the need for effective implementation and monitoring, and discussed the successful steps already undertaken in Gibraltar to address these challenges. The talk also explored potential tools and strategies that could facilitate marine conservation efforts not just in Gibraltar, but in similar regions facing resource constraints.

Natalie concluded her presentation by sharing her extensive background in sustainable practices and ongoing research, emphasising the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in enhancing marine protection and conservation. The discussion offered valuable insights for all attendees, inspiring a collective commitment to preserve our oceans.

Thank you to all who contributed to this important discussion!
