On 21st March, we hosted our fifth and final community lecture, featuring an insightful talk by Dr Leon G. Leanse, titled ‘Antibiotics in the Fight Against Infection: Past, Present, and Future.’

In his talk, Dr Leanse explored the history of antibiotics, tracing their development from discovery to implementation in clinical settings. He paid significant homage to the pioneering researchers who were instrumental in the discovery of antibiotics, recognising their vital contributions. Dr Leanse addressed the pressing issue of the “silent pandemic” of antibiotic resistance, explaining its causes and implications while highlighting the urgency of finding solutions.

He also discussed cutting-edge therapeutics currently in development to combat antibiotic-resistant infections, referencing the concept of the ‘magic bullet’, defined as therapeutics that target infections effectively without harming the host.

Thank you to all who contributed to this important discussion on the challenges and innovations in preserving the efficacy of antibiotics for future generations!
