The University of Gibraltar has partnered with the Gibraltar Defence Police (GDP) to assist in their ongoing Maritime Firearms Training Package. This collaboration has proven invaluable, particularly through the use of the University’s state-of-the-art Maritime Fire Simulator.
The training focuses on vessel police tactics, including firearms operations. Officers are being trained to board and take control of vessels at speed, simulating real-world scenarios in a safe, controlled environment. The University’s Maritime Fire Simulator replicates the internal structures of a vessel, complete with ladders, stairs, and confined spaces. This facility has allowed officers to develop crucial boarding techniques while carrying their full tactical equipment and training.
Chief Firearms Instructor Tarik Chrayeh of the Gibraltar Defence Police highlighted the importance of this collaboration:
“The partnership with the University of Gibraltar has been invaluable to our Maritime Firearms Training Package. Their Maritime Fire Simulator offers a realistic environment for officers to practice vessel boarding tactics safely and effectively. This collaboration not only enhances our officers’ readiness but also provides the University with valuable operational insights that can inform their future training courses.”
The University of Gibraltar’s Head of Maritime Academy, Aaron Lopez, said the following: “The partnership between the University of Gibraltar’s Maritime Academy and the Gibraltar Defence Police exemplifies our shared commitment to maritime safety and security. By providing access to our Maritime Fire Simulator, we’re able to support their training while also gaining valuable insights into real-world maritime operations. This collaboration not only enhances the skills of the officers but also strengthens the Academy’s role in advancing applied maritime training. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship that underscores the importance of practical, hands-on learning.”
The partnership between the University and the GDP is a testament to the importance of local institutions working together to support public safety. The University of Gibraltar is proud to contribute to the ongoing training and development of Gibraltar’s Defence Police.
